Close to one billion people live in crowded, unhealthy informal settlements - commonly referred to as slums - many of which lack security of land tenure, adequate housing, proper sanitation, clean water, and reliable elictricity. Experts estimate that by 2030, more than two billion people will be living in these settlements. Cooper-Hewitt's groundbreaking 2007 book "Design for the Other 90 %" explored design that focused on solutions that address the 90 % of the world's population not traditionally served by the professional design community. This second book now published in an ongoing series, will examine the complex issues arising from an unprecedented urban growth, primarily in the informal settlements of emerging and developing economies.
