Seven million cubic metres of sand: the first islands of Ijburg have emerged from the water. This marks a special point in the history of Dutch physical planning. In the Netherlands, reclaiming land from water is a well tested method for increasing the area of land, but the innovative method of depositing sand to create the land for Ijburg has rarely been applied, and certainly not on such a scale. Ijburg marks a new phase in this tradition. Photographer Jan Schot followed the creation of Ijburg from the first load of sand in January 1999 until May 2001, when housing construction was given green light.
