Bringing together nearly one hundred bocio from the collection of Anne and Jacques Kerchache, this will be the first major exhibition devoted uniquely to this sculptural tradition. Anthropomorphic sculptures made of wood, these objects also include ancillary materials such as bones, shells, string and fabric. Many of these objects were used for aggressive and protective ends, imbuing them with a sense of eeriness that adds to the strangeness of their physical appearance. Intended to complement the exhibition, the VODUN catalog will feature 200 photographs taken by Yuji Ono as part of a special commission, showing the mystery and beauty of these sculptures. Jacques Kerchaches passion for African statuary and vodun arts will be illustrated through a variety of photographs and personal texts.
