The importance of the collection of puppets of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura owes as much to their artistic value as to what these pieces represent in the history of puppets and puppet theater in Mexico. After spending several years in Europe, Germán and Lola Cueto, along with a multidisciplinary group of creators, established the first Mexican puppet theater. The theater fit in perfectly with the cultural policies of post-revolutionary Mexico, its language suited to promoting public literacy and health education campaigns in an engaging way. This led to the first commissions of what would become the Bellas Artes Puppet Theater. The collection presented here is a testimony to the theater's golden age and to the thirty more years during which it operated.
