The exhibition features 180 masks: 100 from the Museums world renowned reserves and the remainder on loan from the Muse du quai Branly in Paris, the Ethnography Museum of Stockholm, the Pigorini Museum in Rome and Belgian private collections. The masks are placed in juxtaposition with works by contemporary artists: Sammy Baloji, Moustapha Dime, Romuald Hazoum, El Loko, Angle Etoundi Essamba, Abdoulaye Konat, Ndary L, Aim Mpane, Aim Ntakiyica, Yinka Shonibare, Antoine Temp, Freddy Tsimba, Barthlmy Toguo and Dominique Zinkp.The exhibition focuses on the theme of identity: a mask can hide or reveal identities. In the case of the traditional mask, the wearer transforms into another person, a divinity, a spirit or sometimes even an animal. Contemporary works and installations address identity, self-respect and the Other.
