From Vaux-le-Vicomte to Versailles, the buildings of Louis Le Vau shaped the image of 17th-century French court society. None, however, has had as dramatic an effect as Mazarin's Collège (166170), the Parisian landmark that now houses the Institut de France. In this first English-language book on Louis XIV's celebrated architect, Hilary Ballon portrays the brilliance and controversy of Le Vau's late career through an exploration of this masterpiece, a hybrid of baroque and classical styles. Tracking the design and construction of the Collège through drawings reproduced here, she demonstrates that its final form is due in part to posthumous attacks on Le Vau by the king's chief minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who accused the architect of embezzling funds from the project and used the opportunity to diminish his architectural influence on the city.
"Hilary Ballon demonstrates with impressive skill that a purely stylistic approach to the architectural history of this period is inadequate for describing the precise ambitions, achievements, and oeuvre of a major architect. Her book enriches our understanding of Mazarin, Colbert, the early reign of Louis XIV, the extent and limits of Louis Quatorzian absolutism, and how buildings got built in the mid-17th century."Philip Benedict
