Ursula Baus studierte zunächst Kunstgeschichte, klassische Archäologie und Philosophie an der Universität Saarbrücken, wechselte jedoch zum Architekturstudium an die Universität Stuttgart und die Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Sie war Architekturredakteurin bei der db deutsche bauzeitung und arbeitet seit 2004 als freie Kritikerin und Buchautorin. Sie ist Mitbegründerin der Partnerschaftsgesellschaft frei04-publizistik, Stuttgart, und hat Lehraufträge an der Universität Stuttgart.

Introduction (Characterization of the building type; Retrospection since 1750; etc.).- Main part: 8 chapters in thematical-chronological order, all the important phases and tendencies in modern construction of bridges are discussed and presented through a) scientific engineering explanations of special bridge types; and b) around 65 examples, each presented on a double page (with text, photos and specially produced plans).- Appendix: Overview over around 200 of the most important European bridges with short description.

The influence on the interplay of technical progress, imagination and functional variety in footbridges are different from those affecting large-scale bridges. This fact has resulted in an exhaustible variety of distinctive design, as is beautifully illustrated by the selection of footbridges shown in this book. Essays clearly explain the technical aspects and the aesthetic potential of different structure designs.
Footbridges contains detailed presentations of 90 european bridges, with text, comprehensive and detail plans, and photographs taken especially for the volume. With projects by Arup, Jürg Conzett, Foster and Partners, Happold, Schlaich Bergermann and Partners, Wilkinson Eyre, Jiri Strasky and others. The examples are organized chronologically in thematically focused chapters: lightweight bridges, moving bridges, covered bridges, taut-ribbon suspension bridges, arch bridges, etc.
