With their vibrant colors and bold geometric forms, the handcrafted designs of Amish quilts seem reminiscent of paintings by Joseph Albers, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, and other abstract artists of the 20th century. This visual coincidence invites a deeper appreciation of the quilts and the communities in which they were created, where principles of the Amish faithsimplicity, humility, discipline, and communityare intentionally imbued in each design. This exhibit catalog presents more than 75 quilts, originating in communities throughout Pennsylvania and the Midwest from the 1880s to the 1940s, with analysis by three quilt experts.
