This book holds the preparatory sketches of a collaboration between Baldessari and Van den Broek, where the last painted on a selection of photographs selected by the former, black-and-white film stills from mid-twentieth century Hollywood movies. Baldessari's work, often combining black-and-white photographs with colour fields, here subtly is interpreted by Van den Broek, resulting in a fascinating and highly original body of works. The plates in the book are doubled by the designer, creating two possible confrontations per spread, and enhancing the ambiguity of the images.
