Ellsworth Kelly schreibt im Editorial: "In 1954, a few weeks after I returned to New York after six years in Paris, a friend of the author Siegfried Gideon gave me a prototype book with blank pages - a publisher's dummy - which I used as Sketchbook 23 (Drawings on a Bus). The original book was published in 1928, and the cover was designed by Moholy-Nagy. While riding the bus, I noticed that the shadows of the window frames falling across my book changed as the bus moved. With my use of drawing by chance, I quickly marked many pages with outlines of the changing shadow. Later in my studio I linked the drawings in the sketchbook, several of which I developed into paintings."
