Sigmar Polke's "Wir Kleinbürger! Zeitgenossen und Zeitgenossinnen (We,the Petit Bourgeois - Contemporaries)" from 1974-1976 has long been an all but forgotten group of works. The ensemble is made up of ten large-scale works on paper, which are reproduced in the book on foldout colour panels. A variety of figures, traces, signs and quotations, inspired by the pop culture of the time, infuse with and are layered upon one another. Based on this series of pictures, the book offers, for the first time, insight into Polke's output during the 1970s, which has been long-neglected by art history. It provides a panorama of a period of West German history marked by hippy culture, proto-punk, the women's movement and terrorism and presents a completely new Sigmar Polke: a multi-faceted Polke.
